The Unresponsive Snails

Snails lurk in the corners, hang in the shadows, and call as little attention to themselves as they can. They are unresponsive, and when you do get answers, they divulge very little information. “How’s the workload?” you ask. “Fine,” they whisper.

To get along with a snail, remember that snails are very reserved and quiet in their manner. Build a rapport, gain his trust, and you’ll have more success with this type. Align your tone with his. If you tend to be bold, speak softly. If you tend to gesture a lot, fold your hands in your lap. Then mimic his body posture. If he leans back, lean back. If he leans forward, do the same. He’ll start to think of you as more like him, more understanding of his nature.

Ask open-ended questions, ones that can’t be answered with a simple yes or no. “Can you give me some information about the project you’re working on?” is better than “Is your project going well?”

A snail processes more slowly. Give him time to think about his answers. “I’ve got a meeting with the client on Monday. Can you give me an update on your project by Friday afternoon?”
